Lock Cory Hill is relishing the competition in Wales’ RBS 6 Nations squad as Saturday’s trip to face Scotland at Murrayfield looms into view.

Hill has come off the bench against both Italy and England in the tournament so far and also featured against Australia, Japan and South Africa before Christmas.

The Newport Gwent Dragons second row is vying for a starting spot with captain Alun Wyn Jones, Jake Ball and Luke Charteris, but says the quality of player around him is only improving his own game.

“When I came in for the Six Nations there was a lot of experience there so I just kept my head down, trained hard, and hoped to get in the matchday 23,” Hill said.

“I’ve managed to do that for the last two games but with Charteris coming back that’s going to be an even harder task. I’ve got to train even harder and push the boys right to the limit.

“I suppose his injury opened the door and I’ve had two appearances off the bench, which I’ll take, but I want to now progress and be involved in a couple more games.”

Bath giant Charteris has missed both of Wales’ first two Six Nations games due to a hand injury.

He is expected to be in contention to face Scotland at Murrayfield, leaving head coach Rob Howley with a selection dilemma.

Hill, who came on for skipper Jones early on against Italy as a blood replacement, said: “I’d only just sat down and up I got because Al went off, but it’s probably better when you don’t have time to think about it.

“I was straight on and straight into it.”

Wales are looking to bounce back from their last-gasp defeat to England when they travel to Edinburgh.

Hill said: “A full stadium for Wales against England was great. It was up there with one of my best rugby experiences so far and hopefully I’ll have a few more like that.

“For 75 minutes the performance was there but ultimately international rugby is all about winning so there was a massive disappointment in the changing room after the game.

“We’ve got to bottle that up now because we’ve got a big game against Scotland.”
