A spirited second-half display from the visitors set up the tense finale after they trailed 14-3 at the interval. Gary Rooks and John Wright scored the first half tries for the hosts.
With league leaders Ynysybwl losing only their fourth game of the season. going down 29-10 at home to strugglers Nantyglo, the title race was thrown wide open. It was Nantyglo’s third win of the season and their first since 5 December in the league.
It means Ynysybwl still lead the way with 66 points, but Penallta have closed the gap to three. Just behind them, Bedlinog look menacing with 63 points.
They thumped fourth placed Brynmawr 44-7 and have three games in hand on the top two. They host Ynysybwl on 16 April in what could be a decisive game in the determining where the title goes this season.
In Division 1 East Central, Ystrad Rhondda thrashed bottom-of-the-table Gilfach Goch 42-3 in an ill-tempered affair that saw two yellow cards for the hosts and a red for Gilfach. Ryan Howells scored an impressive hat-trick for Ystrad with Bradley Llewellyn chipping in with a brace.
Their win moved Ystrad to within 10 points of league leaders Glamorgan Wanderers, whose game at Heol y Cyw was called off. The top two meet at the Wanderers on 30 April
Treorchy and Rhiwbina played out a 15-15 stalemate in an intense top six clash. A second half try from Jacob Lloyd snatched a draw for The Zebras, who were down 7-15 at half-time, while third placed St Joseph’s hopes of challenging for the title took a fatal blow as they were beaten 38-17 at home by Mountain Ash .
Tondu failed to repeat last week’s heroics against Builth Wells as they lost 24-14 at home to Maesteg in Division 1 West Central. Grant Epton, Sam Griffiths, Keiron Mattocks and Lewis Morgan all scored tries for the visitors with Laurence Howley converting two of the efforts.
Scott Walters and Tom Jones touched down with Paul Smithson converting for The Waterwheelers, who remain at the bottom of the league with just two wins. The only other game played in the division saw second placed Ammanford pick up another bonus-point win with a 38-14 win at Builth Wells to cut the gap to 15 points behind league leaders Skewen.
Ammanford have two games in hand on the leaders and will host them in what could be a title decider on 7 May. Ammanford’s next two games are home and away against Tondu.
In Division 1 North, Nant Conwy extended their healthy advantage at the top with a thrilling 42-23 home win over Abergele. Aeron Jones scored a brace for the runaway leaders with David Evans, Gethin Jones, Emrys Evans and Arthur Lennon all scoring tries.
The ever-reliable Delwyn Jones scored 12 points including seven from the boot. Nant have three games to play and travel to second placed Pwllheli on 16 April for a game that could see them clinch the title.
Only one game survived in Division 1 West as Felinfoel turned up the heat on league leaders Dunvant with a 40-17 win at Gorseinon that cut the gap at the top to seven points with four games left to play.
