Pontypridd’s Aled Summerhill has won the penultimate Principality Premiership Player of the Month award.

Ponty were unbeaten in March, securing heavy wins over Ebbw Vale (27-0) and Llanelli (13-61), cementing their place at the top of the Principality Premiership ahead of the winner-takes-all final this weekend (Sunday, 4pm). They also beat Llandovery 36-0 in the Cup quarter-finals.

Summerhill, who has played full back, wing and centre this season, has scored nine tries so far including a hat-trick against Llanelli, and feels having a chance to play regular rugby has made all the difference.

“I’ve been able to reach a level of consistency thanks to being given a lot of game time this season,” said the former Wales Under 18 international.

“It’s my second season back at Ponty having played some of my mini rugby here and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Robert Sidoli and Gareth Wyatt like to play an open brand of rugby and have just carried on from the previous coaches in terms of the ethos of the club.

“It was disappointing to lose in the cup final but the league is vitally important to us and we have a chance this weekend to win some silverware which we are determined to do.”

Summerhill trains with the Blues and is hoping to build on his LV=Cup appearance next season.

“I played for the Blues against the Scarlets this season which was a good experience so hopefully I can have a good pre-season and get some more game time next season.”

Sara David, Principality Building Society’s Pontypridd branch manager, said: “Aled has scored some fantastic tries this season, particularly with his hat-trick against Llanelli in March. These tries have helped Pontypridd to clinch the top spot for another year running and we wish them the best of luck in the Principality Premiership Final.”
