Morgan aims to prove himself in NZ

Newport Gwent Dragons starlet Tyler Morgan is hoping to ‘prove himself’ at the Junior World Championships after Wales warmed up for the tournament with a 31-19 win over Scotland.

Tries from Scott Matthews, Dafydd Howells, Luke Garrett and Harri Evans secured the well-deserved victory for Byron Hayward’s men last week as they get set to jet off to New Zealand to face Fiji on June 2.

Morgan will be on that plane having burst onto the regional rugby scene in recent weeks, putting in a stellar performance on his debut against the Ospreys and later winning the man-of-the-match against Benetton Treviso.

But the outside back will be not just be focusing on rugby whilst out in New Zealand – the 18-year-old will be completing his A-levels in Maths, Biology and Chemistry.

He’s hoping to successfully juggle his sporting and academic challenges as Wales look to go one better than last year’s second-place finish and clinch Junior World Championship glory.

“Hopefully I can prove myself at the World Championships and then get a bit more game time next season and kick on from there. I can’t wait for the World Championships,” said Morgan, who isn’t concerned with whether he plays centre or wing down south.

“I’m doing Biology, Chemistry and Maths A levels and I will be sitting my exams out in New Zealand. It’s a challenge balancing rugby and exams at the same time but I’ve just got to revise a lot.

“I’ll be going as a centre or wing. I’m comfortable on the wing but, to be honest, I would play anywhere on the field.

“I’m best with ball in hand, but I still need to improve every aspect of my game to improve what I’m good at as well.

“You have to improve your strengths and weaknesses, that’s what makes you stand out as a player. I don’t think I have any stand-out strengths as yet but I think I can keep developing.”
