Wales were invited to the Middleburg Sevens by tournament organiser Jakes Van de Merwe. They competed with South African provinces and South African national sides Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and host nation South Africa.

After a positive first day of competition, they lost 24-19 in the final play of their last game of Day One, to South Africa, but overcame a strong Northern Territories side 19-7 in the quarter-finals the next day. They beat Zimbabwe 31-7 in the semis to set up a final tie against South Africa but despite a strong performance, the Wales side lost 21-14, again in the last play but head coach Paul John feels the experience was invaluable.

“It was the first time we’ve ever participated in a competitive, overseas tournament in preparation for the IRB Series so we are hoping that will stand us in good stead for the first Series tournament on the Gold Coast next month,” said John.

“The players responded extremely well to the challenge laid down by us as a coaching team and to the games themselves and performed well in difficult circumstances.”

Following the tournament, the squad and management team were treated to a two day stay at the uBhetyan-o-Africa-Game-Lodge by tournament sponsor Nashua.

“We would like to thank Nashua and the staff at the game reserve, along with Mr van de Merwe and Middleburg School for the wonderful welcome we received throughout our stay in South Africa it was thoroughly successful and enjoyable experience,” added John.
