The famous west Wales club were knocked off the top spot following Pontypridd’s 20-0 victory over Llandovery at Sardis Road on Saturday.

They now face the Wizards in a play-off at Parc y Scarlets with a Sardis Road final against Ponty up for grabs.

Llanelli head coach Anthony Buchanan is delighted to be back in the mix as the club battle for their fourteenth league title in their long and illustrious history.

“It’s great to have a home tie,” said Buchanan. “We’ve won cups and championships in the past and it’s great to be in the mix again.

“We’ve given a lot of young players a chance this season and it’s been great to see the likes of Liam Williams, Scott Williams and Gareth Davies doing so well for the Scarlets – in fact 12 of our players have played for the this season.

“We’ve played Aberavon twice and we’re 2-1 up. Simon King (Aberavon head coach) is a very canny coach but no one in the league enjoys playing against our brand of rugby.”

But Llanelli face an in-form Wizards side, on the back of six consecutive victories including the scalps of Neath and British & Irish Cup semi-finalists Cross Keys.

“It’s just reward for the hard work the boys have put in,” said King. “We finished fourth last season so in terms of progress it’s a nice place to be.

“But we are also disappointed not to finish top. We had a few opportunities which went begging through the season like an early interception try against Llandovery – if we had won that game we would have won the league.

“Both teams have been in good form. They have home advantage but it’s a one off game and we’re looking forward to it.

“People say they have an advantage because of the regional influence but it doesn’t bother me and any club would do the same. We gave them a run for their money just before Christmas and convincingly beat them at home.”
