Round Up: WRU National League One

Emyr Williams’s virtuoso kicking display was the toast of Whitland after his eighteen point haul was enough to down League One West leaders, Tonmawr, in their own back yard.

The kicking maestro accounted for all the points in his side’s 18-15 triumph which pushes Whitland up to sixth in the table and condemned Tonmawr to only their second league defeat of the season. Whitland led 9-0 at the break, as Williams defied the blustery conditions to knock over a hat-trick of penalties, but faced a fierce onslaught in the second period as a revitalised home side hit their straps. First Dave Tiueti and then Ricky Price raced over for Tonmawr tries, but just as they seemed to have salvaged a draw at 15-15, Williams stepped up to strike the winning drop goal and secure his side a stunning victory.

There was another nailbiter at Narberth where luckless home fly-half Aled Davies agonisingly hit the post with a last minute penalty attempt which would have given his side the points in their 17-17 draw with Carmarthen Athletic. Narberth had led 9-3 at the break but found themselves trailing 17-12 with two minutes remaining after winger Josh Freeman and centre Dai Hawkins, who was later red carded for dangerous play, scored tries for the visitors. There was still time though for replacement Tom Bonnell to crash over in the corner for the home side and level the scores but the unfortunate Davies missed the ensuing conversion and then the penalty shot.

DFP – Leaderboard

In other games in League One West, Llangennech defeated Corus 18-15 and Dunvant beat Bridgend Athletic 10-3 thanks to a try from second row Steve Evans.

League One East Leaders Pontypool did just enough to record a bonus point win at Beddau 25-10 while Ian Jenkins and Lewis Protheroe both scored doubles in second-placed Bargoed’s 36-5 win at Fleur-de-Lys.

Owen Williams was another to cross for a brace in Blackwood’s 27-3 win at home to Newbridge while Caerphilly found things slightly tougher at home to Llanharan, edging a tight contest 16-10 with Chris Thomas’s try proving the difference. Cardiff-based clubs UWIC and Rumney each recorded bonus point victories over Llantrisant and Newport Saracens respectively.
