WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 20TH 2002 KO 7:15PM
GLAMORGAN WANDERERS RFC
The Welsh Women’s XV begin their season this Wednesday when they entertain the British Army at Glamorgan Wanderers RFC, kick off 7:15pm.
Under the guidance of new coaches Phil John and Alun Harries, Wales will be looking to use this game as a stepping stone to the Six Nations tournament that begins with a home fixture against Spain next February.
With Wales having had to encounter the loss of six players through retirement following the World Cup, there are six new faces in the starting line up.
UWIC provide Jenny Davies on the tight head and Becky Dando at lock, the latter having graduated through the U19 system. Pontypridd’s Julia Newton makes her senior debut alongside Dando in the second row and Llandaff North captain Esther Eckley gets the first opportunity in the number seven shirt to impress the coaches.
Melissa Berry continues in the role of captain but reverts to her favoured position of flanker having played inside centre during the World Cup. Rhian Williams makes a welcome return alongside newcomer Lowri Jones in the centre having recovered from a broken leg and Non Evans returns at full back following her Commonwealth Games exploits.
With a second warm up game against the British Police taking place on December 20th and more players to be seen before the Six Nations, all players will be looking to put in a performance that secures a shirt against Spain.
As new Head Coach Phil John said ” We are coming along nicely in training and now require a game. The Army will be physical and fit and should provide us with a good test of our abilities.”
