Division One leaders Narberth maintained their position at the top of the table with a 34-24 win over Bonymaen. Acting skipper Simon Daniel was the man of the hour, kicking seven straight penalty goals to punish the home team’s ill-discipline.
Both sides scored two tries apiece, but the score of the night was by Narberth prop Andrew Powell. His powerful burst sent him over the gain line, and then over the try line. It finished 34-24 to Narberth.
Pontypool kept up the pressure on Narberth as they comprehensively outplayed Tondu, winning 50-3. Slick passing and swift movement all night from the visiting side saw them crash over for six tries.
Pontypool’s Tongan favourite Manu Tuipulotu bagged two tries, and claimed assists for two more. Tuipulotu exasperated the home fans, but delighted the travellers with a strong 30m run and neat pass to Sam Waldron late in the game to take Ponty up to the 50-point mark.
Cross Keys lost their unbeaten record as they were edged out 17-16 by Tredegar in a tense match at the Recreation ground. Tredegar’s three tries came from Campbell, Lloyd and Pinch. The win sees Tredegar move out of the bottom three in the division.
Llandovery moved up to fourth place in the table following a deserved 23-12 victory over Bedwas.
The visiting backline had too much pace for their opponents, and too much defensive power to be crossed, winning the try count by three to nil.
The performance of the night goes to Carmarthen, who scored an incredible 11 tries, taking their season total to 29, the highest in the division.
Treorchy were no match for the free scoring Quins, and the home side proved superior in all departments. The game was effectively over at the interval, with Quins 26-3 to the good.
A tight match at Riverside Park between Rumney and Beddau saw the visiting side leave counting their blessings for a 23-21 victory.
Rumney stretched the 13-man Beddau defence all across the park in the final 10 minutes (both hooker Alan Norris and No 8 Neil Lewis watched the latter part of the game from the bin), but the home side were unable to cross the line, leaving them ruing missed chances.
Whitland took their points tally for the season to six as they beat Llanharan 14-3. Whitland went in 9-3 to the good at the interval, and the game’s only try was scored by wing Andrew Richards late in the second period.
Newbridge had three payers sent off in a bad-tempered clash at Glan-y-Nant. Newbridge prop Phil Taylor began the exodus with a right hook, and flanker Damien Cooper also confused rugby for boxing in the second period. He too received his marching orders.
Newbridge fly-half Jason Williams was sent off for ‘kicking’ by referee Keri Evans. It finished 16-9.
Aberavon moved up into third spot as they piled on the points against Glamorgan Wanderers.
The Wizards are now unbeaten at home for a year, and if away form is consistent they will be many people’s favourites for the title.
