Wales Aiming For Games Triumph Over South Africa

Wales face South Africa in the City of Manchester Stadium at 3.20 pm today looking to make it three wins out of three in their Commonwealth Games Sevens pool and secure a quarter-final clash with Canada.
A runaway victory over Sri Lanka, 55-7, was followed up with a highly competent 31-10 triumph over Tonga on Day 1, leaving Jason Forster’s side needing to beat the hihgly rated Springboks to win the Pool.
“We had a good opening day and now everyone is focussed on making it a hat-trick of wins,” said Wales team manager David Rees.
“We all know that beating South Africa is vital to our medal chances. If we win, then we face Canada, if we lose we have to face the reigning world champions and defending champions, New Zealand.”
Pontypridd wing Gareth Wyatt was the star of the opening victory over Sri Lanka as he sped to four of his sides nine tries.
Swansea wing Matthew Robinson notched two and Arwel Thomas drop kicked five conversions.
In the second match against Tonga, Wyatt again grabbed one of his side’s five tries. Wales led 1909 at half-time 19-9 and controlled the game from there on.
Favourties New Zealand beat a typically competitive Canadian side 28-7 in their opening game before crushing the tiny island of Niue, 66-0.
The Canadians more or less guaranteed themselves second place in their Pool with a grim 7-0 triumph over Scotland. The Cannucks now only have to beat Niue to bag a quarter-final slot.
If Wales win their Pool, they will play at 9.20pm tonight. If they finish in second place they will play at 8.00pm.
