Wales Fall To Russians In First Round Of Irb Sevens
WALES 12 RUSSIA 22
Wales suffered at the hands of the Russians in the first of their Pool games in the final round of the IRB World Series Emirates Airline Cardiff Sevens at the Millennium Stadium.
Russia swept in to a 15-0 interval lead courtesy of tries from Sergei Kermenko, Oavel Baranovski and Alex Iampolski before Wales struck back in the second half.
Emyr Lewis scored the first Welsh try a minute into the second half, with
Arwel Thomas converting, and then Gareth Baber cut the deficit to just three points with a second Welsh try.
However, with Wales pushing hard to win the game and follow up their good
form at Twickenham last weekend, Russia broke away and sealed the host nation’s
fate with a fourth try from Andre Akouzin.
In the opening game in the Pool, England just pipped France. The French are Wales’ second opponents.
