James Down was a Blues Academy player during the 2006–2007 season, playing his club rugby with Aberavon in the Principality Premiership. He made his debut for the Cardiff Blues in the Magners League match against the now-disbanded Border Reivers in January 2007.

During the 2006-2007 season he was also a member of the Blues U20 squad that won the U20 Reebok Regional Championship Final against the Ospreys U20.

Down has been a part of the Wales age grade set up at U19 level where he was part of the U19 'Grand Slam' winning side in 2006 and was part of the Wales U20 set up for the 2007 U21 Six Nations.
