Uncapped Scarlets back Macs Page is the youngest player in the Wales senior men’s squad for the two-Test series this summer.

He sat down with back row Taine Plumtree to discuss his call-up, life in camp and how he’s feeling about the responsibility of guarding the squad love spoon in Japan…

Plumtree: So, Pagey, your first [senior] call up – how does it feel and who was the first person you told?
Page: Yeah, it’s awesome. The first person I told was my dad. I FaceTimed him and told him and then I FaceTimed my mam.
Plumtree: Any tears?
Page: My mam was crying, yeah.
Plumtree: No tears from you?
Page: No. No tears from me.

Plumtree: First week in camp done – talk me through your first week?
Page: The highlight is probably that [heat and humidity] chamber. Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Getting used to that heat and being able to work in it. It’s been good getting training. All the boys have been good getting around me.

Plumtree: You’ll be hoping you can get some sort of game time [this summer]. How do you think that is going to feel being able to call back and tell your parents that you’re making your debut?
Page: Well that’s the dream isn’t it, someone growing up in Wales, that’s what you dream of. If I get that opportunity, it’s obviously a proud day for me and my family if it happens and the people have helped me the last few years.
Plumtree: You’ve come straight from the U20s last year and you know, it’s been a class boy.

Plumtree: Is there anything you want to take out of the tour?
Page: Yeah. I can’t wait to get out there. It’ll be my first time going anywhere in like a camp environment. And yeah, hopefully we get the wins and hopefully I can take learnings off the coaches and other people.

Plumtree: Just a couple of questions that have been asked by your fans. If you and Ellis Mee were to have a sit down dinner just you two. Who’s going to carry the conversation and why?
Page: We probably just won’t talk the whole dinner…
Plumtree (laughing): Just look at each other?
Page: Yeah, just not talk.

Plumtree: There’ve been rumours that you’ve got the biggest bench [press] in the backs in the squad, which is impressive. Was there any help from Gareth Davies? Anything in particular?
Page: Yeah, just helping Gar push me the last few months has probably helped me with my biggest bench, yeah.
Plumtree: Yeah, yeah. Just pushing you yeah? Nice.

Plumtree: So, our tradition, we have the love spoon and the youngest on tour has to keep that with them at all times. Are you watching out for anyone to potentially take that away from you and stitch you up?
Page: Probably you, yeah. But no, I’m nervous to not lose it. I have to keep it real close and if I lose it I don’t know what’s going to happen?
Plumtree: I think it’s some sort of fine, but you’ll figure that out. I wouldn’t set you up, bro. That’s not me.
Page: Yeah you would.
