Wales head coach Sean Lynn will name a new captain in a key step in his determination to drive change within the squad ahead of the forthcoming summer tour of Australia and RWC 2025.

Lynn, who won the PWR Director of Rugby Award for the 2025 Season, was appointed Wales Women’s national Head coach after winning three successive PWR league titles with Gloucester/Hartpury.

The Swansea-born Lynn took charge of his country a week before the recent W6N campaign and has underlined his determination to change the culture and drive the national side to success.

Centre Hannah Jones, who has been capped 65-times by Wales, was appointed national captain for the 2023 Six Nations tournament and will still play a key leadership role within the squad.

Lynn named a 45-player Wales summer training squad with a host of new faces from Wales U18s, U20s and the Celtic Challenge to underline his commitment to change in the senior national squad.

Sean Lynn, the Wales Head coach, said: “This is a new chapter for the team, and I am determined to drive the change we need with the squad, coaches and staff so that we build real success on solid foundations.

“A new Wales captain is part of this process, and we have some candidates, but they need to prove that they have the qualities to lead the national side.

“Hannah Jones has done a really professional job in challenging circumstances that have been well documented, but we will call for a fresh voice in a deliberate move to grow the leadership within the squad.

“Hannah remains a valued and senior member of the squad. We have enjoyed great success together at club level and I want us to do the same at international level.

“I made it clear when I was appointed by the WRU that this was the job I always wanted and I needed the mandate to create a new team culture, to drive standards and challenge coaches, players and staff to build a team to make the nation proud.
“That is something we will all do together, and developing more leaders is one of many steps on that journey.”

Jones is a key player in Wales Head coach Sean Lynn’s Women’s squad and remains a WRU contracted player in the national senior squad.
She made her Wales debut against Scotland in 2015 as a 16-year-old and has won three successive league titles with her club Gloucester/Hartpury.

She captained Wales to a third-place finish at the 2023 W6N and led the side to WXV1 in New Zealand the same year.
Jones was one of the 12 Wales ‘Originals’ offered full-time professional contracts by the WRU back in 2022 and has been an ever-present in the national senior squad since then.
