Cardiff Rugby’s squad for next season has been boosted by the signing of two international tight head props and the news that legendary Wales and British & Irish Lions No 8 Taulupe Faletau has extended his stay at the Arms Park.
There were fears that Faletau, out of contract at the end of June, may head overseas, but he has agreed a new deal and will be joined next season by Scottish international front row man Javan Sebastian and Wales tight head Sam Wainwright.
In another boost to head coach Matt Sherratt the highly experienced and versatile Rory Jennings has also agreed a new deal. It means the squad that doubled its number of victories this season over last will be very much ‘as you were’ heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
Faletau joined the capital city region in 2022 when he returned ‘home’ from Bath. Injuries have curtailed his appearances to a mere 23 since then, but he came back with a bang in December and was hugely influential in the second half of the season.
“I’m really happy to be staying with Cardiff and continuing to play my rugby here at home. Being part of this group of players has been amazing,” said Faletau.
“There’s a good vibe on and off the pitch, and I really enjoy working with Matt Sherratt. His insights and support have challenged me to grow and improve.
“Playing at the Arms Park is also truly special and the support we receive is brilliant. I’m grateful for the continued opportunity and I’m looking forward to what’s shaping up to be an exciting year ahead.”
Sebastian will be returning to Wales from Edinburgh, who he joined from Scarlets, and has won 11 caps. North Walian Wainwright, capped four times by Wales, is heading east to join Cardiff from from Parc y Scarlets, where he spent the past three years having previously played for Saracens.
“We’re all delighted to be able to keep Taulupe at Cardiff and in Wales – and we’re also delighted to secure the services of Javan and Sam,” said head coach Sherratt.
“Taulupe is one of very few players who has real quality in every aspect of the game. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to pull on a Cardiff shirt and the red shirt of Wales and we are delighted he is staying with us.
“Javan has gone away from Wales and developed as a person and a player, picking up international experience. He is technically excellent around his set piece and will add to the Cardiff game model with his work in open play.
“Sam will add real depth and competition. He has very good experience for a 27-year-old – playing in the English Premiership at Saracens and the URC with the Scarlets, while also gaining international experience.
“He has a real passion for the set piece and a great work ethic that will enable him to add to our game model.”
