Welsh official gets World Cup appointment as new trophy revealed

The new Women's World Cup trophy for RWC2025

As the clock clicks through 100 days to go until the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 kicks off in Sunderland with a game between host nation England and inaugural champions the USA at the Stadium of Light on 22 August the tournament organisers have revealed a new trophy for the event.

The first women’s World Cup was staged in Wales in 1991 and has grown massively since then. Already 300,000 tickets for this year’s event have been sold – more than double the attendance at the last World Cup held in New Zealand in 2021.

As more tickets go on sale for the eight venues – Sean Lynn’s Welsh side kick-off their campaign against Scotland at the Salford Community Centre on Saturday 23 August – the new trophy has also been unveiled to usher in a new era for the women’s game around the world.

And further good news came as the countdown gathered pace in that Wales will have a match official involved for the first time. Amber Stamp-Dunstan is included among the 22 officials as an assistant referee. Seventeen of the officials are women with the other five men being used at TMOs only.

“Amber’s appointment is testament to how incredibly hard she has worked. She is a very driven and motivated individual, and I’m delighted to see her reach these heights,” said WRU National Elite Performance Match Official Manager Ian Davies.

“I know Amber isn’t content with being an Assistant Referee. She is very much targeting swapping the flag for the whistle when 2029 comes along, and I have no doubt that her ability, enthusiasm and desire will get her there.”

Wales are drawn in Pool B with Canada, Scotland and Fiji and will be heading to Australia this summer to play two tests against Australia in the build-up to the tournament.

Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Managing Director Sarah Massey said: “We are just 100 days away from welcoming the world to England for what will be the biggest and best Women’s Rugby World Cup yet.

“The excitement is real, and the momentum is building by the day, as this tournament promises to be an unforgettable experience for everyone. With more tickets going on sale today, don’t miss out on seeing rugby’s powerful personalities and unstoppable athletes take to the global stage.”

The new Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy was unveiled at London’s Battersea Power Station. Crafted in sterling silver and plated with 24-carat gold, the newly designed trophy is a modern expression of excellence and ambition.

It fuses history and future by retaining the iconic twin handles of the original prize while introducing a sleek, oval silhouette, with names of past champions engraved on its base acknowledging the trailblazers who have shaped the game.

The world map etched into the surface symbolises the game’s universal reach, celebrating the nations that have competed on the Rugby World Cup stage and the new stars who will carry the game forward.

For the first time at RWC 2025, all six World Rugby regions will be represented across the 16 nations involved with a South American team, Brazil, making their debut on the sport’s biggest stage.

World Rugby Chief of Women’s Rugby Sally Horrox said: “This trophy represents far more than a tournament; it reflects a movement. A movement fuelled by passion, shaped by trailblazers, and driven by the next generation of women and girls stepping into the game around the world.

“Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is set to redefine what’s possible in women’s sport. The new trophy is a worthy emblem of the incredible athletes who will compete in England, and of the legacy we are building together with our partners, starting with the RFU, and through programmes like Impact Beyond 2025.”

The trophy will now embark on a nationwide tour of England over the next three weeks, bringing fans and communities closer to the tournament in the build-up to kick-off.
