Bielle-Biarrey and Freeman steer Bordeaux-Begles and Northampton into Champions Cup final

Two stunning performances from Northampton Saints and Bordeaux-Begles steered them into the final of the Investec Champions Cup at Principality Stadium on Saturday 24 May as last year’s two finalists were overpowered.

And the EPCR Challenge Cup final, which will be playing the night before in the Welsh capital, will be between Bath and Lyon after they beat Edinburgh in their respective semi-finals.

Saints, who last won the title in 2000 and who were finalists in Cardiff in 2011, went to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and beat four-time champions Leinster in their own backyard, 37-34. England wing Tommy Freeman was the star of the game, scoring a hat-trick of tries.

A day later, the Six Nations player of the year, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, raced in for two tries as the home side upset the holders Toulouse 35-18 at Matmut Atlantique Stadium to reach their first Champions Cup final.

Bordeaux-Begles played in the inaugural season of what was then Heineken Cup rugby back in 1995-96. Their first game in the tournament was a 14-14 draw on home soil against Cardiff!

Now they will be bidding to become only the 14th club to win the most prestigious club title in world rugby, and the fifth side from the Top 14, when they play in the final at the home of Welsh rugby.

It will be the eighth time the Champions Cup final (1996, 1997, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2014) has been played at Principality Stadium. The Challenge Cup final will be returning to Cardiff for the third time (2011, 2014).
