Ospreys stay in the play-off race with nine try derby win

Keelan Giles scored twice for the Ospreys

The Ospreys made up for losing their last two Welsh derbies to Scarlets and Cardiff by running in nine tries in their last home game of the season to sink the Dragons 57-24.

There were two tries each for wing Keelan Giles and outside half Dan Edwards, who finished with 20 points in the match, as Jac Morgan’s men kept alive their slim hopes of reaching the play-offs for the second successive season.

They now head to South Africa for two final games of the regular league campaign to face the Sharks and Lions probably needing maximum points to rise from their current tally of 38 down in 11th place.

Dragons took an early 10-point lead through a try from Wales U20 wing Harry Rees-Weldon on his debut. Angus O’Brien added the conversion and a penalty.

The Ospreys responded with tries from lock Will Spencer and Wales hooker Dewi Lake to lead 14-10 at half-time. Then came the try doubles from Edwards and Giles, with prop Ben Warren and scrum-halves Kieran Hardy and Reuben Morgan-Williams also crossing.

The Dragons responded with further tries of their own from Wales scrum half Rhodri Williams and wing Jared Rosser in the second half, but it was far too little, too late.

It was the last professional game in Wales for the Dragons’ Wales and British & Irish Lions flanker Dan Lydiate, who also had a spell at the Ospreys, while home lock Adam Beard was given a great send off in his game at the Swansea.Com Stadium in an Ospreys jersey before he heads to France next season.
