Ebbw Vale lose again to leave Cardiff on verge of topping SRC table

Cori Lewis-Jenkins scored the opening try for Aberavon

Cardiff need only one point to clinch top spot in Super Rygbi Cymru after Ebbw Vale went down to a 19-14 defeat at Aberavon.

It means the Blue & Blacks are now six points clear at the top with one game to play. If they pick up just one point against Pontypool at Pontypool Park on Saturday, they won’t be able to get caught by The Steelmen.

The top four sides all receive home draws in the quarter-final stage and the top two will be at home in the semis if they get that far.  While Ebbw are six-points behind Cardiff, Newport are three behind second and Llandovery are four points back.

It was Ebbw’s second away defeat in the space of four days after they went down to a 40-14 loss at Rodney Parade against Newport.

The Drovers play their 18th and final game at Bridgend tonight (Thursday 17 April), while Newport had to Carmarthen Quins at the weekend. Ebbw Vale will defend their SRC Challenger Shield at Eugene Cross Park on Saturday against bottom of the table Swansea.

Ospreys’ academy wing Cori Lewis-Jenkins gave the Wizards the lead with a try in the 11th minute, but Ebbw hit back with a try from full back Morgan Richards than Evans Lloyd converted to give them a 7-5 interval lead

Eight minutes after the re-start, home No 8 Ben Gregory crashed over for a second Aberavon try that Charlie Thomas improved to regain the lead. Back came The Steelmen with a try from their Canadian international flanker Sion Parry and a second Lloyd conversion to make it 14-12 to the visitors.

The winning score came in the 73rd minute when lock James Clegg scored a third Aberavon try. Ed Dunford added the extras, and the Wizards snatched their fifth home win of the season to remain in sixth place in the table.
