Dragons skipper Ben Carter is back in the mix for selection for the Judgement Day clash with Scarlets after finally overcoming the knee injury he picked up in training with Wales prior to the Autumn Nations Series.
It has meant the international second row has missed 12 games since he last led out his side against Connacht in October. His injury absence was extended when he underwent ankle surgery as well.
Given the Dragons have only won once in the BKT United Rugby Championship all season, against Ospreys in the opening game, his would be a timely return.
Also lined up to return is the man who took over from him as captain, Angus O’Brien. He has missed the past six games after fracturing his thumb in January
“Ben is calm around the group and is really diligent around his preparation, bringing confidence to those around him,” said head coach Filo Tiatia.
“He doesn’t waste his words, and I really enjoy the way that he operates – he takes players with him. Ben has been great and if you look at the shape of him now to when he was injured it shows that he has worked hard on himself.
“He was unable to play but was diligent around the things that he could control and keep improving. He has been awesome, and I am looking forward to him being involved.”
Former captain Rhodri Williams will be one of the few survivors from the inaugural Judgement Day back in 2013, when he was playing for Scarlets. His has been a whirlwind season in which he bridged a gap of 10 years to add to his Wales cap collection.
“Our last win in the league was the first match of the season. Since then, we’ve had opportunities, but just not been able to close games out,” admitted Williams.
“You can never fault the support from our fans, they are always there shouting us on. That’s what makes it even more frustrating, that we haven’t been able to give back to them some positive results.
“We would love to get another victory for them this weekend. It’s an exciting occasion and one all the teams will be well up for.”
