Brilliant Cardiff set Arms Park alight to stay in URC play-off contention

Harri Millard scores one of Cardiff's four tries

Matt Sherratt challenged his Cardiff side to come up with 10 points from their two games against Ospreys and Munster and they delivered.

The upshot is they are very much in the race for a quarter-final place after moving up to fifth with their 26-21 win over the Irishmen. Two tries in each half swept them to a stunning victory in front of a raucous 11, 253 Arms Park crowd.

You had to go back to 17 September 2022 for Cardiff’s last win over Munster, a 20-13 triumph at the Arms Park, and they were full value for this morale boosting victory.

It could have been even better had the referee not ruled out a fifth minute try from Johan Mulder for a forward pass and had Callum Sheedy not missed with a late drop goal attempt and hit the upright with a wide angled penalty.

Munster drew first blood with a try from Calvin Nash that was set-up by a brilliant 25 metre pass from Craig Casey. Jack Crowley added the extras.

Back came Cardiff and skipper Liam Belcher was just held up in the left corner. He put his toe in touch as he went for the line and from the throw in Niall Scannell was off target.

Cardiff opted for a throw, hit James Botham at the back and then went for the drive. That’s when Fineen Wycherley was spotted tapping down a pass and within five minutes of him being in the sin bin the home side had struck twice.

Ben Thomas and Callum Sheedy showed good hands to release Gabe Hamer-Webb on the left wing for the first try and then Hamer-Webb beat Nash and Mike Haley to a cross-field kick on his 10 metre line.

He released man of the match Taulupe Faletau on a charging run up to the 22 and his inside pass allowed centre Harri Milard to bag his eighth try of the season. Sheedy converted and Cardiff had the lead on the half-hour mark.

No sooner had Wycherley returned to the field than Munster conjured up a second try to ensure they went into the break with a 14-12 lead. Once again, it was a Crowley penalty kick into the corner that set-up the attacking platform before Haley was worked over with some neat back line inter-play, Crowley adding the extras.

Tom Farrell extended the Munster lead when he sliced through the line to score at the posts. Crowley converted and the visitors boasted a nine point lead.

But that was as good as it got for them as Cardiff bossed the rest of the game. The penalty try came after a lengthy chat to the TMO and the Mulder sniped over from a ruck on the Munster line for a try that Thomas improved.
