Rowland Phillips’ side claimed their first win of the campaign against Scotland at Scotstoun in round four. And Thomas is confident they can keep momentum going against a dangerous Ireland side. “It’s always a good game against Ireland,” said Thomas.
“They have a great back-row and it’s going to be a very competitive game. We’re going to have to front up against them and they will never give up.
“We have to stick to our processes and when we get opportunities we have to take them. Our defensive structures are in a good place and from an attacking point of view we just need to score those tries after creating them.
“I’ve had quite a few battles with Ireland down the years and they’ve all been difficult games.” Wales may have only won one game to date in this Six Nations but Thomas believes they have laid the building blocks for future successes.
“We’ve kicked on from the autumn internationals,” she said. “We’ve kicked on from the autumn internationals.
“We had some good competitive fixtures there and in the Six Nations we’ve managed to blood a lot of young players.
“Lauren Smyth pretty much owns the 15 shirt now while Alex Callender has made a big impact throughout the whole Six Nations. It’s a brilliant opportunity for those girls to come in and actually fight for the shirt.
“By doing that it increases competition in the squad. Overall we’ve put in some good building blocks.”
